An interesting opportunity for young people from allover Europe who are interested in doing volunteering activities with the construction work in the Northeast of Portugal to join the ESC short term volunteering project "Reconstruction of a Traditional Pigeon House" in Vimioso, Portugal. This opportunity is organised by "Palombar" association and funded by the European Union through the European Solidarity Corps program.
About the Project
"Reconstruction of a Traditional Pigeon House" is a short term volunteering project in the small village Vimioso, Northeast of Portugal, near the Douro River. Even though it is a very small village with only a few inhabitants, it is home to more than 30 traditional dovecotes and other priceless heritage elements – both built and natural. The 46th International Volunteering Work Camp - Reconstruction of a Traditional Pigeon House, will have the main objective of the restoration of dry stone walls from a pigeon house, benefiting the community of Uva in a direct way, and at the same time preserving tangible and intangible elements of cultural heritage.
The main tasks for volunteers will be as following
- Cleaning old debris;
- Removing the existing plaster;
- Rebuilding the dovecotes’ walls wherever necessary;
- Preparing the limestone mortar;
- Whitewashing the walls.
The host organisation will organise activities in the leisure time aimed at the volunteers’ integration in the local community and their discovery of the region.
Prior to the volunteers' arrival, the host organization will conduct an online preparatory meeting for the activity. When the work camp begins, a brief introductory presentation will be given upon the volunteers' arrival. Before starting, there will be a training session on the materials and techniques to be used, as well as safety issues.
