Brave Hands 2025| ESC Team volunteering in Portugal (Fully Funded)

An open call for young people from all over Europe to join a three-weeks ESC Team volunteering project "Brave Hands" in Oliveira de Azeméis, small city in Northern Portugal from 5-25th of March 2025. The project will be organised by The Portuguese Red Cross – Local Branch of Cucujães and funded by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union.

About the Volunteering

Brave Hands is a Volunteering Teams project, It gives young people from different European countries the chance to volunteer with the Red Cross in Portugal for a period of 19 days from 5/03/2025 to 25/03/2025. The main Volunteer tasks will be:

Maintenance and creation of new pedestrian trails in natural areas.

- Clearing invasive plants and replacing them with native plants.

- Trash and litter clean up, river plogging.

- Promote local historical and patrimonial heritage through Physical activity outdoors (trails, running, water sports etc).

- Identify and register patrimonial heritage (water mills, historical buildings) on site of pedestrian trails.

- Filming wildlife with trapping cameras, taking landscape and sports photographs

All the activities during the three weeks of volunteering will take place in Oliveira de Azeméis is a small city with an area of 161,10 Km2 and 66 175 habitants. It is located 40 Km away from Aveiro and 50 Km from Porto. Oliveira de Azeméis belongs to the District of Aveiro. It is also part of Porto Metropolitan area.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- Young people aged between 18-30 years old from ESC programme countries;

- Ability to do physical work and spend most of the time in outdoor activities;

- Practical people who would like to get their hands dirty and helping in what is needed.

Open minded, adaptable to new contexts and surroundings;

Having experience in cooking for big groups is a plus but it is not mandatory;

Having experience in outdoor work or Sports in nature is also a plus!

Note: This is an inclusive Project. Participants with fewer opportunities will be given priority of selection.


Expenses and Benefits

- Volunteers will be accommodated all together in a deactivated fire station in the centre of Oliveira de Azeméis. The participants will be divided in two different rooms according to gender.

- The venue is equipped with toilets and showers with hot water, kitchen, common spaces and exterior spaces.

Volunteers will receive a pocket money allowance of 6 € per day.

Food will be provided by the Red Cross and the volunteers, divided in teams, will be in charge of cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner for all the participants.

- During the volunteer’s days off, food allowance will be given to the volunteers.

Volunteers will be reimbursed (upon presentation of the original receipts, invoices, and tickets/ boarding passes) the amount they spent on their travel from their original country (to start the project) and back to their original country (at the end of the project). the maximum amount of the travel reimbursement will be as following; 

  • from 10 - 99 km: 28,00€ (Standard travel) / 56,00€ (Green travel)
  • from 100 - 499 km: 211,00€ (Standard travel)  / 285,00€ (Green travel)
  • from 500 - 1999 km: 309,00€ (Standard travel) / 417€ (Green travel)
- Health Insurance will be provided through European Health Insurance Card therefore it is mandatory to have a valid EHIC for the entire duration of the volunteering project.
