An exciting opportunity for international students and fresh graduates from STEM fields to attend a fully funded internship in The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Japan 2025 for a period of 3-6 months. The OIST Graduate School will provide the accommodation, travel expenses, daily allowance, and visa support if needed.

About OIST Internship

The OIST Graduate School offers excellent education and research opportunities through its Research Internship program in STEM fields for international students from all over the world. The internship lasts between 3 to 6 months. These short-term employment give students the opportunity to gain experience in a particular laboratory or to learn a specific technique. Research Interns will work under the direction of a Professor and contribute to the research activities of OIST.

Positions for research interns are given out twice a year on a competitive basis. The desired research's appropriateness, academic background, available funds, and space are all taken into consideration throughout the very competitive selection process. Not every open post will inevitably be filled.

Eligibility | Who can apply?

- All nationalities are eligible to apply for OIST research internship.

- International students who are currently in their last 2 years of a bachelor's degree or at any year in their Master's degree or those who have graduated with Bachelor's or master's degree from recognised university.

Currently enrolled students must get approval from their home institution/ university. The academic background of applicants should be appropriate to their desired host unit(s) at OIST.


Expenses and Benefits

OIST will provide the following support for the selected applicants:

- Accommodation in Furnished apartment in or outside the campus.

- The travel expenses for one direct round-trip flight to and from Japan.

- OSTI shuttle Bus pass 

JPY 2,400 per working day (excluding non-taxable days and weekends) 

- OIST will also help with local registration, insurance processes, and visa acquisition. 


Required documents

1. Academic Transcript and Diploma 

A copy in digital form of your most recent academic transcripts as well as any transcripts from previous degrees (BS, MS, etc.) in PDF format if applicable. You may upload a scanned copy of an unofficial transcript or other grade record to the application page. your transcript should be written in English.

Note: If you have not graduated and do not have a diploma yet, please upload a certificate of enrolment from your institution (which preferably indicates your expected graduation date)

2. Statement of purpose

the statement of interest form is provided on the the online application system in which you need to write no more 400 words (2500 characters) including the following points;

  • How does OIST and your desired research unit(s) fit with your current expertise and skill set? If you are interested in multiple research units, please explain your interest and fit for each briefly within one single statement.
  • What do you hope to accomplish at OIST?
  • How does a research internship at OIST fit into your overall career plans/aspirations?

3. Recommendation letter 

You need a letter of recommendation from an academic or research expert who is familiar with your work. Each applicant must provide a minimum of one and a maximum of three letters of recommendation from qualified referees. Using the email addresses you specify in the web application form, the application system will contact your recommenders directly to request the letter(s).

Note: Before entering your referee's information into the form, kindly get their permission. Email letters from candidates are not allowed. When OIST gets a letter of reference, applicants will instantly be informed about it inside the application system.

4. Passport

Applicants must provide their passport number and scan of it or other government-issued ID in case they don't have a passport yet during the application process, but a valid passport is required upon selection for visa and travel arrangements to Japan.

5. ID photo

Upload a recent photo of yourself taken within the last 3 months showing your face from the front in standard passport orientation.
