An excellent opportunity for undergraduate students from all over the world who are interested in pursuing an M.S or Ph.D degree in the future in a field related to natural sciences to apply for University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) 2025 in Japan for six weeks in Summer 2025. The project provides financial support as one-time allowance to cover the costs of the round-trip airfare to Japan and daily expenses.
About UTRIP Internship
The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) is an intensive summer research program organized by the Graduate School of Science (GSS) at the University of Tokyo. Launched in 2010 to enhance internationalisation, UTRIP invites talented undergraduate students from abroad who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees such as an M.S. or Ph.D to join UTRIP for six weeks. The program provides participants with personalized research guidance from renowned faculty across physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, and biological sciences.
Open to undergraduates majoring in natural sciences and enrolled in their second year or beyond at non-Japanese universities, UTRIP offers a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research while experiencing Japanese language and culture through short courses and excursions. It serves as a stepping stone for students aiming to pursue graduate studies at the University of Tokyo, offering a glimpse into its academic rigor and vibrant scholarly community.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- University students from all over the world except Japan who have completed at least one year in a Bachelor's degree program related to natural sciences such as ( Physics, Chemistry, astronomy, Biological sciences);
- Students must be enrolled in, and after the internship in their home university with at least another semester, quarter, or another equivalent academic term;
- Thinking in pursuing long-term career goals in scientific area;
- Be able to commit to the entire six consecutive weeks of the UTRIP program on a full-time basis;
- Be able to present coverage of a health insurance plan that is effective during the internship program before arriving in Japan;
- Students must show a proof of English proficiency: test scores of TOEFL or IELTS are required if English is not your first language. Test scores that have already expired are accepted, as long as the applicant is still able to produce proof of the test scores upon request by the UTRIP office. Students who have received an English-medium education continuously for the past 8 years are exempted from submitting English proficiency test scores.
Expenses and Benefits
- Each trainees will receive one-time allowance to support both round-trip airfare to Japan and daily expenses such as meals and transportation. The amount of the one-time allowance will be based on the location of your current university as shown in the following table:
- As part of the GSS-UTRIP Scholarship, free housing will be provided for the duration of the stay (43 nights).
- To dedicate all their efforts to conduct the UTRIP project
- To participate in the entire period of the project for the full six-week
- To attend all academic and social events scheduled over the course of the UTRIP program
- To submit a written research final report approved by the UTRIP supervisor within two weeks of finishing the UTRIP program
- To give an oral presentation on the scheduled day
- To complete all required procedures by the designated deadlines
