An exciting opportunity for young people from Europe to join a three-week ESC team Volunteering project "Barbering, Arts, Mechanics (BAM) ", which will take place at KIA, the Prison of Aruba island from 12-30 May 2025. This project is organized by "Tur Cos Ta Posibel" and funded by the European Solidarity Corps Programme of the European Union.
About Aruba
Aruba is a Dutch Overseas Country and Territory (OCT) and one of the three constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean region. Aruba is an island with a population of 107,504 (2022). Oranjestad is the capital of which is a vibrant tourist area. the official languages are Papiamento, Dutch, and Spanish. English is widely spoken among the locals. the climate in Aruba is Hot and windy, 28 degrees C, and may experience heavy rain but the temperature rarely drops.
About the Project
"Tur Cos Ta Posibel" invites volunteers from all over Europe and Aruba to join its three-week ESC volunteering project "Barbering, Arts, Mechanics (BAM)" which takes place in KIA, the prison of Aruba island. The volunteers will have the opportunity to positively influence the lives of the young inmates (age 21- 30) of the male departments of KIA prison with both professional and recreational activities.
After the successful previous editions of AMIS and FAIS (check on TCTP website), BAM is going to be a project where Artistic activities like a mural in the sport ground will go alongside with more professionalising activities like Barbery and Mechanics, that will help the young inmates in their future professional life outside the prison.
Most of the activities will take place in San Nicolas in the south of the island, where the prison is located.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- Volunteers must be over 21 years and less than 31 years old by the start day of the project;
- Have at least one of the following skills or experience and be able to share that skill with others: Barbering, Art and/or Mechanics;
- Volunteers must be a resident in one of the following countries ( Albania, Aruba, Austria, Belgium, Bonaire Sint Eustatius and Saba, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Curaçao, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French Guiana, French Polynesia, French Southern and Antarctic Territories, Germany, Greece, Guadeloupe, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Réunion, Saint Martin (French part), Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, St Pierre and Miquelon, Sweden, Ireland)
- Volunteers must be fluent in English, knowing Dutch, Spanish, and/or Papiamento would be a plus.
- Volunteers must exhibit significant empathy and sensitivity, along with strong adaptability, flexibility, and maturity.
Expenses and Benefits
- Volunteers will be accommodated in a large youth house featuring male and female dormitories, showers, toilets, a large outdoor area, a large living room, and a kitchen where they will prepare their own meals.
- Rooms will be shared with between 2 and 5 people in our community house.
- Volunteers will receive a bank card with a food allowance so they can buy and prepare their own meals (lunch meals on weekdays will be at KIA) and purchase household necessities.
- The accommodation is well located, just a 5-minute walk from a local beach, and with all the appliances and equipment needed for self-catering. Towels will be provided.
- Volunteers will receive training in all aspects of the activity, along with obtaining a YOUTH PASS certificate by the end of the project, and support in creating it.
- TCTP will cover economy flights with hand luggage and a van will be provided for getting to and from KIA according to the European Solidarity Corps Programme rules.
