The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a decentralised agency of the European Union (EU), located in Amsterdam. It began operating in 1995. It is responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision, and safety monitoring of medicines in the EU.
About the EMA Traineeships 2025
EMA is looking for motivated, qualified recent graduates or students on an Erasmus+ or other programme or PhD students or Master's students (who posses a previous degree), who are interested in gaining experience and contribute to the Agency’s work for every patient in Europe. The purpose of a traineeship at the Agency is to perform tasks that are predominantly in the interest of the trainee’s training and principally serve to increase the trainee’s knowledge and to gain relevant experience.
The traineeships last 10 months and take place at the Agency’s headquarters in Amsterdam, with the possibility for teleworking up to 40% of working time from the Netherlands and occasional teleworking from outside the Netherlands. Traineeships are offered for either full-time or part-time (80% or 50%) if combined with university studies.
The traineeships are offered in several units and offices at the EMA as follows:
- The Talent Development Office.
- The Quality and Risk Management Office.
- The Quality and Safety of Medicines Department.
- The Digital Business Transformation Task Force.
- The Staff Relations and Support Department.
- The Regulatory Science and Innovation Task Force.
- The Human Medicines Division.
- The Therapeutic Areas Department.
- The Scientific Evidence Generation Department.
- The Information Management Division.
- The Committees and Quality Assurance Department.
- The Data Analytics and Methods Task Force.
- The Veterinary Medicines Division.
- The Public Health Threats Department.
- The International Affairs Department.
- The Transparency Department.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- Trainees must be citizens of European Union Member States or the European Economic Area.
- Applications are open for recent university graduates (up to 12 months after graduation), or university students enrolled in an Erasmus+ + or similar programme, or PhD students. Depending on the area of work, specific degrees may be necessary for some trainees.
- Applicants must have a good command of English (minimum level C1) and proficiency in one or more official EU languages (minimum B2 level) are also required.
Expenses and Benefits
- The Agency pays a monthly stipend of €1,942.19 for a full-time traineeship (reduced accordingly for 80% or 50%).
- Each trainee will have a mentor at the Agency who will guide the trainee through the programme.
- During the traineeship programme, trainees are only personally insured against the risk of accidents and death under the Agency’s liability insurance.
- The Agency does not provide private health insurance. Trainees are responsible for taking out health insurance covering the Netherlands, for registering with their local General Practitioner (GP) or making other private arrangements.
- - Travel contribution upon joining the Agency. The amount of the travel allowance is based on the distance between your place and Amsterdam as follows:
- less than 50 km >>> Zero
- from 50-150 km >>> 100 EUR
- from 151- 500 km >>> 200 EUR
- from 501 - 1000 km >>> 400 EUR
- from 1001 - 2000 km >>> 600 EUR
- from 2001 - 3000 km >>> 800 EUR
- over 3000 km >>> 1000 EUR
